Apply WIM directly from Distribution Point share

When testing, doing Build and Capture or simply low on local space, you might skip copying the WIM to a local folder before applying, just to save some time.

By default SCCM will first copy the WIM to a local folder and the apply the WIM.

The WIM file is downloaded to _SMSTaskSequence\Packages

We can change this by setting the option Access content directly from the distribution point on the step Apply operating System in the Task Sequence:

On the Operation System Image in question select properties and Data Access tab. Here select Copy the content in this package to a package share on distribution points:

Setting this option will copy the WIM file to the package share on your distribution point, increasing your storage need (unless you use deduplication):

Now the WIM is applied directly from the share.

MDT 2013 Update 1 re-released (build 8298)

It is no secret that MDT 2013 Update 1 had more than one problem:

Microsoft has now updated MDT 2013 Update 1 to build 8298 and fixed some of the problem but as you can read here there are still known issues:

KMS update for Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 7

 

Until now KMS support for Windows 10 clients has only been available on Windows 8, 8.1, 2012 and 2012 R2.

But now Microsoft has released an update that enables Windows 7 and Windows server 2008 R2 KMS hosts to activate Windows 10.

Change SCCM 2012 R2 from evaluation to licensed

When installing SCCM 2012 R2 you are able to install it in evaluation mode:

How do we identify if SCCM has been installed in evaluation mode?

Very hard to overlook, when starting System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager console, it will be shown clearly in the top:

OK but lets change to a valid license, start Configuration manager Setup from your start menu:

Click Next:

Select Perform site maintenance or reset this site:

Enter your license key:

image

Accept license terms:

image

Close the setup wizard:

image

And now the evaluation warning is gone (restart the console):

There was an error connecting to VMware vSphere Update Manager

You might see this error after installing VMware Update Manager plug-in.

There was an error connecting toVMware vSphere Update Manager. Database temporarily unavailable or has network problems.

The problem here could be that you installed Update Manager with a remote SQL 2005, 2008 or 2012 database using Windows Authentication and the Update Manager Service is set to log in as a Local System Account.

Right click on VMware vSphere Update Manager Service and select Properties:

Change Local system Account to your desired service account and password:

Click OK to this warning:

Restart the service:

 Enabling the Update Manager plug-in fails with the error: database unavailable or has network problems (1015223)
